Website vs BlogWebsite vs Blog?

As a web designer, I often get this question. Websites and Blogs have some very different features, and depending on your online goals, one may be better than the other, or you might want both. Here are the basic benefits of each one:

Websites

Websites are usually static, meaning they do not change very often. A company’s website may have information on products, services, staffing, and other general information about the company. They are generally not very interactive. Since they are mostly static, search engines can only index a limited number of keyword phrases. A website is an extension of the business and is a great branding tool.

Websites can contain scheduling calendars, chatbots, and other interactive elements. However, they are usually static when it comes to adding new content regularly.

Blogs

A blog can be much like a website but can also be much more. Blogs are more interactive and accumulate content for search engines to index. There are an unlimited number of keyword phrases that your blog can be indexed for – over a period of time. This is the main advantage that Blogs have over a static website. Because Blogs are often updated with new content, your blog will be found with search terms that your static website would never be indexed under. Blogs also allow you to interact with your readers and customers and help build your authority in the industry quicker than a static website. The one drawback of a blog is this: If you do not use it, you should not have one. A dormant Blog will have the opposite effect – it can hurt your credibility and authority.

If you have the discipline to post often on a blog, this is a great venue for building traffic for your main site.

Website vs Blog or both?

Ideally, the choice is not website vs blog but both! When your website contains a blog, search engines keep coming back to it looking for new information, which is perfect for search engine optimization. The key is to write a new blog post at least once per month, if not more often.
