Social Media Mistake #2 ~ Not Targeted Friends, Fans, Or Followers

By Dotty · Comments (0)

HUGE mistake #2 ~ Following and Friending everyone.

Targeted TrafficWhat would be better ~ Standing in the middle of this crows and shouting your message or being in a more private room and talking with a few interested people?

What would be better?  Having a really large number of people in your friend/fan base that do not care about your business, or having a small number of targeted people that want your services, like your products, or are genuinely a fan of yours?  The smaller number of people are going to be way more responsive to your message than the large number that simply do not care.

How do you find targeted followers and friends online?

The trick is to look for people that are looking for your services or products.  For example, Read More→

Biggest Social Media Mistake

By Dotty · Comments (0)
Saturday, August 28th, 2010

This one is HUGE!

Social Media StrategyNot Having A  Strategy or Plan

I have talked with so many business owners that have “tried” Social Media and decided that it does not work.  When I ask them what their strategy was and how it was to be measured they have no answer.

Would you create a marketing campaign off line without a plan?

Online advertising, branding, and marketing needs to have a plan and strategy just like the offline counter parts.

Without a plan Social Media is a HUGE WASTE OF TIME!

A Social Media Plan has many parts.

First of all Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) profiles need to link back to a blog.  Social media is social relationship building – it is not sales.  Do not link a profile to a sales page.  Building solid relationships online means providing valuable content.

Here is one (of many) Social Media Strategies: Read More→

Is Social Media Worth My Time?

By Dotty · Comments (0)
Friday, April 2nd, 2010

Social Media – A Total Waste of Time!

Social Media for BusinessI can’t tell you how often I hear that.  Business owners just do not see the point, purpose, or reason to engage in any Social Media.  If you are wondering ~ I am defining Social Media sites as the following:

  • FaceBook
  • FanPages
  • Twitter
  • YouTube
  • LinkedIn
  • Plaxo
  • Digg
  • StumbleUpon
  • Flikr
  • The Thousands of other media and content sharing sites out there

I am here to tell you that Social Media is WORTH your time as a business owner.  Let me explain:

Google has added a new (beta) feature that will turn your thoughts around concerning Social Media.

Social Search

Social search is the next BIG thing for searching.  I will explain from 2 points of view ~ the consumer and the business owner.  Social Search is when Google includes content from the people you know (via social sites) in your search results.   The Social Search results sit at the bottom of the first page of your search results.  They include a photo and what that person said and linked to.

Social Search Consumer

If you are looking for a service, restaurant, or whatever in your local area would you be more likely to use the services of someone you already know?  How about a service that is recommended by someone you know?  I am much more likely to click on content produced by someone I already know and trust.  Here was a search I did for a Realtor in my area.

Social Search

Social Search Business Owner

I think it is obvious why you want to be featured in the Social Search if you are a business owner.  The term Realtor (in any city) is a very sought after and hard to achieve key word phrase.  To get on the first page of Google for such a highly competitive keyword takes a great deal of Search Engine Optimization and constant work on your website.  Pay-Per-Click advertising for phrases that are highly competitive is very expensive.   Both Dale Chumbley and Mitch Canton are in my Social Circle (directly connected to me) and therefore I would seek their services before going elsewhere.  As a Business Owner you will never show up in these search results if you do not have a Social Circle – period.

How Social Search Works

Google determines your Social Circle through the people connected to you in different social networks.  They know your social networks by the links YOU enter into your Google Profile. (Don’t have one ~ shame on you!)  They also look at connections from other Google services like:

  • Google Friend Connect
  • Google Reader
  • Google Buzz
  • Gmail

Your Social Circle also extends 1 more level ~ to the people connected directly with your direct connections. To get an idea of how that works ~ I have 425 Google Friend Connect friends.  My second level is 2518.  That is only from 1 service.  Factoring in Twitter, FaceBook, my FanPage, Digg, StumbleUpon, MySpace, YouTube, Flikr, Plaxo, and the other networks the number of people (including second level) is huge. I have added up 141,676 and that is not all of my network when considering the second level or the more obscure sites I belong to ~ and I have relatively small networks compared to some people I know.  When any one of those people search for something I have written content on, a service I have recommended, or anything I have shared with my Social Network then my image and content will show on their search.  How cool is that?

Do you want a piece of that pie?  Get out there are start using Social Media ~ It won’t kill you and it might just help! :)

Twitter Lists: Local Marketing Potential

By Dotty · Comments (2)

Twitter Lists – Local Marketing just got easier!

twitter bird Twitter Lists: Local Marketing PotentialTwitter listened – and Twitter Lists are now in Beta.  It is currently a limited release but will become open to everyone very soon.  It became active in my profile tonight and I must say I am impressed.  This is going to be a huge marketing tool.

Let’s look at this from a Small Business point of view.  Some of the complaints that local small business owners have mentioned to me are:

  • There is no easy way to follow people on Twitter
  • Twitter is overwhelming
  • Twitter is a waste of time
  • I don’t sell to the world
  • I need local customers

Twitter Lists will address all of these concerns in one fell swoop.  This is how it works – Twitter allows you to create any list or way to sort your connections.  You can have as many lists as you want to create.  Let’s think about this for a minute.  I went into my account tonight and created 3 lists -

  • Vancouver Wa (Where I live)
  • Portland OR (Very close to where I live)
  • Renegade ( Online Marketing Teachers)

I will be going back and creating lists for potential clients, potential power partners, current clients, and new ideas or gadgets in the Internet world.

After creating these lists I went through my people I am following and sorted them into respective lists.  They will get notified in their accounts that they have been put into a list.  They then have the option to follow the entire list of people if it is a list that interests them.  For people marketing locally this is HUGE!  For a new person or business in the Vancouver area coming into Twitter they now have a way to find and follow many of the Vancouver Twitter users instantly.

This also lets me read and follow just the people locally, or just my potential clients, just my clients, just my power partners – you get the idea.  It will make using Twitter way easier and way more focused.  I see this as a huge advancement for businesses that market locally on the Internet.

Twitter For Business

Ever wonder how to use Twitter in your business?

Get customers with TwitterI will be speaking and teaching this topic on Monday June 15th 2009 at the Round Table Pizza on the corner of Thurstan and Vancouver Mall Blvd.   I will be at a Networking meeting that meets there every Monday at noon.  The meeting is over at 1:00.  If you have ever wondered how to use Twitter in your business effectively then come and learn about some tools and ideas that will make it work for you.  Here is a Twitter story  taken from an article called Conversational Marketing with Twitter by Kalena Jordan

In February 2009, Utah-based Mexican restaurant chain Costa Vida sent a one-day-only offer for a free burrito to its 80 Twitter followers.  As part of the promotion, Costa Vida required customers to have an electronic coupon on their mobile phone.

The burrito was designed to test the effectiveness of leveraging social media websites like Twitter and FaceBook in brand building and driving restaurant traffic.  However, Costa Vida customers tweeted about the promotion and forwarded the offer to friends via mobile phone.  Their followers told their own followers and so on, until more than 2500 people inundated one of Costa Vida’s stores looking for their free burrito.

Want to learn how to do this for your business?

See you Monday
